New to the scene?

Your first milonga

A few things every tango dancer in Budapest wishes someone had told them before their first night out.

What is a milonga?

A milonga is a social tango evening — not a class and not a performance. People come to dance with different partners to classic and modern tango music, meet friends, and enjoy the night. Most Budapest milongas start in the evening and run late.

What is the difference between a milonga and a práctica?

A práctica is a more relaxed practice session: it is fine to try things out, talk about a step, or repeat a movement. A milonga is for social dancing, so people dance rather than practise. If you are new, a práctica is the gentlest way to start.

How do invitations work at a milonga?

Usually with the eyes. The invitation is a look and a small nod across the room, called the mirada and cabeceo. If the other person nods back, you meet on the floor. If they look away, it is a polite no — and nobody has to say anything.

What are tandas and cortinas?

Music at a milonga is played in tandas: sets of three or four songs in a similar style. Between tandas, a short piece of non-tango music, the cortina, signals a change. You usually dance a whole tanda with the same partner, then thank each other and clear the floor.

What are the basic rules on the dance floor?

Couples move together around the room counterclockwise, in lanes, without overtaking or stopping in the flow. Leaders keep an eye on the couples around them. And one simple rule keeps the atmosphere good: nobody teaches their partner on the dance floor.

I am a beginner — when can I go to my first milonga?

Sooner than you think. After about three months of regular classes most people are ready, and many go even earlier to watch and dance a few tandas. Go with classmates, arrive early when the floor is calmer, and start with a práctica if you are nervous. Smooth-soled shoes help a lot.
